Viola reichenbachiana

Viola reichenbachiana

The early dog violet is the earliest of the three native dog violets to the UK and the earliest to flower. It can be distinguished from the others by the spur of the flower being clearly darker than the petals. Found naturally throughout the UK in and around woodlands, it is a very pretty and dainty flower. The leaves are heart-shaped with scalloped edges. The photograph here was taken at Bickenhall Wood near Taunton, Somerset.
