An absolutely stunning cultivar producing lightly scented, rich maroon tulip-shaped flowers in late spring. It has taken 15 years of breeding between M. x soulangeana and M. liliiflora to produce a plant that produces these astounding flowers that retain their colour well. It often produces a second flush of flowers later in the summer. Perfect for smaller gardens owing to its compact habit, this deciduous small tree is a welcome addition to any garden, creating some real elegance in late spring.

Magnolias are one of the best and most spectacular of flowering shrubs, a real harbinger of spring. We have all seen wonderful specimens on our travels. Sadly, they can be very misunderstood plants with many people frightened off by their ultimate sheer size and the fear that the flower buds may be damaged by late frosts resulting in the loss of the flowers. Most Magnolias will actually adapt to their climatic surroundings pretty well and whilst there always remains a slight risk of frost damage to the buds, this isn't likely to happen all the time, and once established, a plant may well flower slightly later than usual. With such a magnificent display to look forward to, don't let yourself be put off by the common myths around growing these intrinsically beautiful plants.
