We carry probably the largest stock in the UK of specimen Dicksonia antartica. Even as bare trunks these plants are amazing.
However what we do is carefully select trunks which have more character; slender with curves, bends, and twists. (Slender Benders!) Then we pot them to accentuate their character.
Some trunks even have "beards", a term to describe the trunk forming a sort of point on its downward side where water has dripped onto and run off the trunk. The plants are grown on for a minimum of 12-18 months so that they become fully rooted in their pot and have produced at least two sets of fronds. They are watered by hand on a daily basis to encourage moss and fern growth on the trunks.
