Fruit & Vegetable Growing

Garlic

Garlic requires a free-draining, fertile soil in a sunny position.  Thoroughly dig over the site with a fork, removing any weeds.  Adding a general fertilizer will improve yields.

Mark out a row using a string line or cane.  If the garlic is in whole bulbs, break them into cloves before planting.  Plant the individual cloves 3cm / 1in deep and 10cm / 4in apart along the row.

Keep the soil moist during the growing period.  Remove any weeds which otherwise will compete with the garlic for food and water.

In midsummer, the leaves will start to die down.  Lift the garlic out of the soil and leave on the surface to ripen for a few days.  When dry, store in a light airy position, dry and frost free.

Garlic is said to deter many garden pests.
