Iris descriptions
Our plant descriptions include references to the standards, the 3 upper petals, the falls, the lower petals, the beards and the hairs of which are often strikingly coloured. The term self refers to a flower of a single solid colour; a plicata is a flower of white or yellow ground, stitched or veined with a different colour. Substance is grower's shorthand for the thickness of the petals.
Dwarf bearded iris
The delightful DWARF iris start the season in late April in the UK, flower through to the end of May, and are ideal for the front of a border or a rock garden.
Intermediate bearded iris
INTERMEDIATE bearded cultivars (IB or BB) generally flower from mid May and have a tidy growth habit, ideal for the borders of a smaller garden.
Iris ensata
Iris
ensata (syn.
I.kaempferi
) is also known as the Japanese Iris. They are herbaceous perennials with long narrow strap like leaves. They flower from mid June until the end of July depending upon locality and local growing conditions. If left undisturbed for several years they will form large clumps which could be as much as 60cm across. The flowers are all shades of white, blue and pink and many hundreds of different forms have been bred, many with two or more rows of petals instead of the usual single row. They grow best in a reasonably moist garden soil containing plenty of organic matter as they are heavy feeders. In fact they are ideal plants for a bog garden where they will really luxuriate in the extra dampness. They prefer a sunny or part shaded location. Unless otherwise stated all will grow 80-100cm in height depending on growing conditions.
Plants sold in 1 litre pots, shipping all year round.
Tall bearded iris
Stately TALL bearded iris (TB) begin to flower in mid May and continue through June.
